The Mission Field Took Me Farther Than I Expected, Again

The church is rising in small homes, crowded streets, and wide-open hearts.

Summer on Assignment

Almost 20 years ago, I served with this talented couple on a mission trip to Darkhan in northern Mongolia. They married shortly after that first trip. It was a joy to reconnect with them in July and meet their three daughters while in Ulaanbaatar, the nation’s capital. (See our 2006 picture below.)

This summer I had the opportunity to return to Kenya and Mongolia where I previously served.

In Kenya, I had the joy of attending the Professional Women Meditation and Journaling Convention on Mfangano Island, western Kenya, hosted by the West Kenya Union Conference. Women from across the region gathered at the Siamba Resort on Lake Victoria to grow spiritually. I saw women who attend the church I helped establish in 2002 in Homa Bay, also on

Lake Victoria, and who attended my evangelistic series in the area in 2024. All the attendees wore a unique outfit made from the same theme fabric, creating a beautiful display of unity and individuality. Hope Channel covered the event, and shared the videos with me. Add the lessons shared with these women to your morning worship time:

Then came Mongolia.

Almost 20 years after my first visit, I returned to Mongolia. This time my assignment was in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar (UB)—now a striking blend of traditional gers (yurts) and gleaming skyscrapers. Quiet Hour Ministries organized our mission, and I was stationed at Immanuel Seventh-day Adventist Church in a registered educational center tucked into a converted apartment. Most local churches in Mongolia function this way due to government restrictions on religious registration. They reminded me of early house churches—intimate, determined, and full of faith.

UB’s ger districts, where two of our outreach sites were located, revealed a different side of the city. Though the gers are stationary now, many residents still rely on public wells, pit toilets, and coal-burning stoves, creating severe pollution and heath issues. There is beauty to be found in the hardship though as some gers are decorated with breathtaking wood carvings. Plus, the warmth of the people shines through their hospitality, gratitude, and eagerness to learn about Jesus.

Our outreach included 10 days of evangelistic meetings, alongside children’s programs and health ministries. My teammates, Peggy from Oregon, and Evelyn from Colorado, are seasoned children’s missionaries whose engaging programs drew in children night after night. The health sessions offered blood pressure and glucose checks, plus cooking demos that introduced local families to new foods and simple, healthy recipes.

My sermons introduced Jesus as our Savior, emphasizing the importance of a personal, vibrant relationship with Him, and ended with the reality of His promise to return and to take to heaven those who have established that relationship.

Please pray that the gospel continues to spread across both continents. And I encourage you, whether God chooses to use you at home or abroad, before large groups or just one person, to share His love today.

There was joy in the house of the Lord when my luggage arrived in Mfangano Island, Kenya. I was on the shores of Victoria Lake preparing to preach while my suitcase remained in Paris for three days. That didn’t stop us. It was a privilege to present at the Professional Women Meditation and Journaling Convention hosted by the West Kenya Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

PARTNERSHIP REPORT

GRM2 is the only organization partnered with Refuge House, the abuse shelter, to provide monthly gifts for the residents, including sorely needed bus passes.

The ladies’ needs continue to increase as Refuge House resources are stretched between multiple housing facilities.

Basics like soap, lotion, hair products, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products are regularly in short supply.

Your donation of any amount will both encourage the ladies and enlarge GRM2’s impact.

Please help us help women who have sought protection at Refuge House.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT

Did you know I offer a weekly prayer each Monday on Facebook and Youtube?

Listen, share, and be blessed. This particular prayer asks a pointed question: When there is mud on your blessing, are you still grateful? Click on the video to hear the full explanation.

Why Glucose Spikes Matter

Even if you do not have diabetes, repeated glucose spikes after meals can silently damage your health. These spikes overwork your insulin system, leading to insulin resistance—the root of type 2 diabetes, weight gain, and chronic fatigue. They also fuel inflammation, harm blood vessels, and increase the risk of heart disease and cognitive decline.

Here are four ways to reduce your blood glucose levels:

  1. Eat vegetables first, then proteins and fats and then starches and sugars.

  2. Start the day with a savory meal, nothing sweet (with the occasional exception of fruit).

  3. Move for 10 minutes after you eat.

  4. Have dessert—meaning, if you eat something sweet, eat it after a meal and not as a snack on an empty stomach.
